NEW BAND

jackie's got a new band
same bass and drums as before
and a couple of songs she wrote over winter break
new paint on the bass drum
fancy shirts and matching pants
they play the same old bars through the same worn out PAs

and everything's going right
but nobody's there
they're doing everything right
and nobody cares

jackie moved to a new city
in the cheapest part of town
and a friend of a friend of a friend knows a drummer around
the open mic went great
she booked a show in may
and everyone she met she tried to get to go

and everything‘s going right
but nobody's there
they're doing everything right
and nobody oares

but those old tunes don't cut it no more
you ain't worth a damn if they ain't on the dance floor
but jackie's got the bug
yeah she got the bug real bad
so it must be time to start a new band

jackie's got a new sound
this time she's got it right...

I CHOOSE YOU

if you ever find a man you think would more understand you
well I hope you don't decide too soon
though I know I'm not always the greatest of guys
I'll try harder than the next in line
‘cause there's millions and millions of
single men on the planet
I ain't the only one who'd love to be loved by you
but when I'm thinking of the babies you and I could be raising
I think they'd be fucking cool

if you let me let you down just every once in a while
by the morning I'll have found a way to make you smile
if you will let me darling
I hope you agree my darling
if I had the choice I'd choose you

hey I choose you
yeah I choose you
and I hope someday you will choose me too

but every decade down the road will bring a wandering mind
maybe you'll fall for a beautiful guy
one who drinks in moderation picks you up right on time
and can pronounce all of your favorite wines
I ain't got much more to offer than this t shirt and jeans
underneath my fingernails might never be clean
still I'm thinking of those babies you and I could be raising
I can't wait to meet 'em

I ain’t a fancy man in the kitchen
and I’ll need you to drive me home
when I’ve been drinking out all night

-----

YOU AND I

it takes one to know one
so I guess I'll be seeing you around
it's gonna take me a few more lovers
for me to learn
but I'd still like to lie with you
yeah I'd still like to lie with you
and I lied to you to get there
yeah I lied to you

I do wish that this jukebox
would stop playing all your songs
you and I were monsters
now we don't belong
and when you can not find one better
you stick with what you got
once upon a time we were dreamers
now we're not

but you and i
you and I used to have it alright
used to have it alright
you and i

the parts of you that bug me most
just remind me of mine
you can have the dance halls
and I'll take all the dives
but if you'd still like to lie with me
you know that might not be a bad idea

you and I
yeah you and I used to have it alright
at least we never said I love you
at least we didn't pretend to care
at least you never met my family
but you and I used to have it alright

it takes one to know one
so I guess I'll be seeing you around

-----

BEFORE IT ENDS

why that's just what the world needs
another white guy with guitar
with his mediocre love songs
he'll empty out your bars
he'll try to sell you records
but you'll buy your drinks instead
yeah that's just what the world needs before it ends

yeah the world could use a few more fans
of sports on tv
we're hungry for clever hashtags
on the hunt for the perfect meme
but the things we need are so much more
than shelter, clothes, or food
we need water for the all-inclusive cruise

the earth is catching up with all those dinosaurs we've burned
those stuck inside the ghetto still cannot afford to learn
one day all women will earn as much as men
at least I hope so, before it ends

the world needs more ways
we can complain about the day
more avenues to disagree
more chances to deflate
you don't need to have been there
you just need to click the link
now you're an expert, please tell us what you think

yeah this nation needs a leader
who's a backward assed buffoon
while out of touch white men
decide the future of your womb
and empathetic apathy ain't what this country needs
we need action, we need a fucking stampede

the earth is catching up with all those dinosaurs we've burned
those stuck inside the ghetto still cannot afford to learn
one day all women will earn as much as men
at least I hope so, before it ends

we need more teachers, fewer preachers
we need strong women to raise strong girls
we gotta find a way to shorten up the distance
between our hands, and our mouths, and the earth

yeah the world could use a few more men
to explain us what we need
everyone quiet down now
stop scrolling through your feed
once you have the attention
of the strangers in the room
redirect it to how much left there is to do

FOUR AM

sing a song of alcohol
it's four am and I'm wide awake
I can't believe she hasn't called me yet

there's no romantic protocol
getting older at a constant rate
you and I on a carolina beach
it's too much
it's too much to forget

pacing up and down the hall
the bottle's never far away
you never had the wherewithal to tell me

that you were always worried
about my tendency to drink
but a person's got to want to change
and now you've got me worried
about all my tendencies
but I could have gave it up for you my love
I think

well I hope you found another guy
whose vices you can justify
and he doesn't leave you high and dry
like you did

-----

WE DON'T BELONG

all the wasted yesterdays
climates we can't hope to change
just leave me be

morning clouds on her wedding day
one more language died today
only two degrees

the master seeks a protege
most of us are underpaid
it looks like rain

because there's nothing fair in love or war
and the gunshots never cease

the ship contains the stowaway
cracks beneath the shifting bay
no one's got to stay

airplane lights in the milky way
whose party is this anyway
they bow their heads to pray

jesus christ was just a guy
so nice he had to die

when all is said
and all is done
the match is over and you've still not won
you've heard it all you've just gone along
but the only thing I ever learned
is we don't belong
we don't belong

GREAT PLAINS

it's only been six months my friend I can't believe she's going
so I'm packing up my hatchback to a farm in north dakota
writing off my troubles in a hammock in the shade
gonna put me back together

in the great plains my dear
if you're bored of coastal phonies
great plains my dear
if a lover leaves you lonely
great plains are here
in the morning you're the only one
with the prairie grass and the golden sun
and the wind is making waves and all is one
these are great plains

we met up in nebraska in an ancient b & b
and she wasn't exactly sorry and I wasn't exactly me
but we drank our way through dinner and we shuffled in the sheets
in the morning she drove south and I went angrily back east

though looking back we never had the chance to be together again
no I can't remember what I thought I saw in her
now the book of love between us has been written down
and it's fitting the final chapter takes place

in the great plains my dear
if you're bored of coastal phonies
great plains my dear
if a lover leaves you lonely
great plains are here
if you can't recall what the stars are like
and you need your private space and time
to be left alone with the wider sky
to forget the girl and to clear your mind
and when there's nothing left to leave behind
while you're looking for a lover down the road
these are great plains

RESCUE ME

I never knew I needed rescuing
till you watched me get high in the morning
I could see in your eyes that I was
less than the man you deserved
but if you take me home tonight
we can talk about my fractured mind
can't quite admit that I might
want you to rescue me

one of us is a fool this time
you can't quite change overnight
I don't care if I'm screaming
no I won't calm down for the kids
I'm leaving you alone tonight
don't you ask anymore, I'm just out for a ride
I'm a grown ass man, you see
I don't want you to rescue me

most of those on my mom's side
and half the men on my dad's
had a problem with the bottle
or worse
though I know I've got free will
genetics are a climb uphill
but it's easy to play the victim of their ways
I'm going home alone tonight
I have no idea if I'll get real high
takes a man a long ass time
to decide he needs rescuing

baby I'm gonna need some time
I hope when it's over you're by my side
takes a man a long ass time
to decide he needs rescuing

if you take me home tonight
we might find out what's wrong inside
can't quite admit that i might
want you to rescue me

GUYS FROM OHIO

we were referred to as guys from ohio
another introduction in a bar
and the council's going round, finding out who's on the town
met a beauty who's talking back to me
you and I used to share more words
there was a time I called you daily
but you can't quite talk when you're cavorting
she'd abort it anyway

a few years ago she left ohio
alaska, on down to new orleans
the laughter's coming quick and in her eyes I caught a glimpse
of a parallel life that I might lead
but you and I have plans laid
through the summer into fall
so I do not ask her for her number
neither answer when you call

all the times that we're apart, my dear
I know we said that we could sleep around
but every time you lay down your body
you run the risk of letting someone down
cause it's hard to separate those body parts
from the strings busy pulling at your heart
so all it is I ask of you
is if I sleep with her
should I think of you

in a russian bar at the end of the mississip
I met a beauty and watched her walk away
before I had a chance to give her ass a final glance
I'm told she's into women anyway
so you and I will remain you and I
and I'll be back in town on friday
and when we lie together naked
I'll try not to think of her

-----

BREATHE IN DEEP

talkin' myself into stayin'
found a gal who will stick around
thinkin‘ about makin' a baby
stop closing the bars down
talkin' to dad about aging
he's saying you'll need money to grow old
but baby, if you are ready
will you be my home?

when you let your heart make up your mind
let your life be finally intertwined
with that someone who loves you back
I'm told it's worth it

I wish I believed in a savior
sometimes I'm jealous of their certainty
my mind has always been one to waver
don't know what I can guarantee
but some days will feel like vacation
just sailing along with the breeze
I'm hoping when you go into labor
it's my hand you're giving a squeeze

if you let your heart win over your mind
let the leaves keep filtering the light
let the fog roll through
let it rain all day

when you let your heart make up your mind
let your life be endlessly intertwined
with that someone who loves you back
I'm told it's worth it
you and I are always gonna fight
nobody knows just when they're gonna die
you just close your eyes
just close your eyes
yeah close your eyes

keep on breathing
breathe in deep
